Abstract for “Complexity of Value and Moral Enhancement” – Joao Fabiano

In this chapter I will develop the complexity and fragility of moral trait thesis and its implications for moral enhancement. I will argue that our moral cognition is (1) more descriptively complex than common targets of human enhancement, and thus that any theory explaining our moral reasoning will be hard to provide and; (2) more prone to unintended consequences from attempts to enhance it, i.e., it is more fragile. Thus, I will conclude moral enhancement has new and substantial risks.
